Mobile power for professional agricultural drones

Agricultural drones are used in modern farming for applications including spraying, spreading and the distribution of agricultural materials. To operate these professional systems efficiently in remote areas, the energy required to recharge their flight batteries must be available directly at the job site. A correctly specified generator can supply the relevant charger without requiring access to a permanent mains connection.

Selecting the right generator involves considerably more than comparing wattage or kVA figures. High-power agricultural drone chargers have specific requirements regarding voltage, frequency, continuous power, phase configuration and electrical connections. The actual output available on each individual phase may also be critical. A generator is therefore not automatically suitable simply because its advertised total output exceeds the stated power demand of the charger.

Which generator is suitable for an agricultural drone?

The required generator specification is primarily determined by the charger being used, rather than by the drone alone. Batteries, chargers, connections and power requirements can differ even within the same drone product family.

Before selecting a generator, the following information should be checked:

  • manufacturer and exact model of the agricultural drone

  • type and designation of the flight battery

  • exact charger model

  • permitted input voltage and frequency

  • single-phase or three-phase input

  • maximum input power or current

  • required plug, connector and circuit protection

  • intended charging mode and operating duration

  • any additional loads to be powered simultaneously

Current DJI Agras systems, for example, use different batteries, chargers and manufacturer generator solutions depending on the drone model. DJI assigns the C8000 charger to the Agras T25 system and the C10000 charger to the Agras T50 system. Newer and higher-output systems have different electrical requirements. It would therefore be technically incorrect to describe one generator as universally suitable for every DJI Agras drone.

Continuous rated power matters

When evaluating a generator, the continuous rated output is more relevant than its short-term maximum or peak output. Depending on the product, the prominently advertised maximum figure may only be available for a limited period and must not be treated as continuous power.

With three-phase generators, it is also necessary to determine how the total output is distributed across the individual phases. A generator that appears to provide sufficient total power may still be unsuitable for a high-output single-phase charger if the required power cannot be supplied through the relevant phase.

230 V or 400 V?

Whether a 230 V or 400 V generator is required depends on the charger’s specified input. Particularly powerful charging systems may require a three-phase supply and a correspondingly high continuous rated output. Other chargers operate from single-phase AC power or use more than one separate input.

The presence of a 230 V or 400 V socket alone does not confirm compatibility. Voltage, current, phase allocation, connector type, circuit protection and the continuous power available at the required outlet must all match.

Electrical connections, modifications and adapter solutions must only be used in accordance with the equipment manufacturers’ instructions and applicable electrical requirements. Where necessary, this work must be carried out by an appropriately qualified professional.

Generators for DJI Agras and other agricultural drones

This category is intended for operators of professional agricultural, spraying and spreading drones who require a mobile power supply for high-output charging equipment. This includes users of DJI Agras charging systems and comparable professional agricultural drone platforms.

Whether a specific generator can be used with a DJI Agras T25, T25P, T40, T50, T70P or T100, for example, depends on the battery and charger actually being used. The drone model name alone is not sufficient to confirm compatibility.
