Worm gear winches are suitable for applications where safe, controlled pulling of the load is required. The drum stops automatically as soon as cranking stops. This means that there is no freewheeling mode and no special mechanism is required to stop the roller gear. This safety feature makes worm gear winches ideal for applications such as lifting boats on davits and raising and lowering retractable keels on sailboats. Worm gear winches do not require a minimum load to operate.
All Dutton-Lainson worm gear winches are suitable for versatile pulling and lifting applications.
They are not to be used as a hoist for lifting, holding or carrying people or for carrying loads over areas where people may be present.
Worm gear winches are required for applications that require safe, controlled movement of loads. They hold your load precisely in position - automatically. There is no freewheeling mode, no special mechanism is required to stop gear movement, and they do not require a minimum load to operate. Features include:
- Laminated high-carbon steel gears for longer life
- All gears are heat treated to increase strength.
- Permanently lubricated bearings on drive shafts are maintenance free
- Non-loop drive models feature a rugged steel handle with ergonomically designed grip
- Rigid, welded roller construction for added strength
- Load-matched gear ratios for easier cranking
- All coated parts are galvanized with TUFFPLATE®.
- Slotted mounting holes for easy installation
- Stamped and reinforced heavy gauge steel bases for added strength

The specified traction capacity is based on the direct rope pull on the first rope layer of the drum. The capacity is reduced by depending on the number of rope layers on the drum
The drum capacity depends on the rope diameter. (Rope not included.) Ropes listed may be too large for some applications.
